BIO
I paint like a sculptor and sculpt like a painter. My work is a series of pared-down objects made from natural and industrial materials; this frequently includes wood, metals, plaster, roofing patch, concrete and varnish – layered, assembled or carved in such a way to create diverse textures and forms. Often my work visually compels this desire to touch the surface. The process of addition and subtraction is used to build both paintings and sculpture. The structures have a rawness emphasizing the human hand in the “making” of each piece. My personal history starting from working class rural roots, to the Vietnam war, to my career in the Juvenile Justice System working toward reform has made these lasting impressions. What I learned from these experiences is humility and respect, which I attempt to demonstrate collectively in my work.
